The “gigueux” (jig doll) is half-game, half-musical instrument. The wooden sculpture has a rod affixed to its back and comes with a dance paddle. The user must sit and place the paddle under their thigh, and makes the doll dance by holding it with one hand and moving the paddle with the other. The gigueux has long been popular with seniors as it reminds them of childhood memories and traditional evenings with family and friends.

The sculpture here is the work of L. J. Brunet. It represents Father Germain Lemieux, S.J., founder of the Centre franco-ontarien de folklore (Franco-Ontarian Folklore Centre). The Centre’s mission is to collect, preserve and showcase Ontario’s Francophone heritage.
