Né le 5 janvier 1914 à Cap-Chat (Québec), Germain Lemieux est ordonné prêtre jésuite en 1947 et devient par la suite professeur au Collège du Sacré-Cœur et à l’Université de Sudbury. De 1948 à 1958, il entreprend l’étude du folklore dans la région du Nouvel-Ontario, puis en 1959, il fonde l’Institut de folklore de l’Université de Sudbury, qui deviendra le Centre franco-ontarien de folklore en 1972. Germain Lemieux continue de parcourir le nord de l’Ontario à la recherche des contes et des chansons populaires qu’il publie dans une collection de 33 volumes, intitulée Les Vieux m’ont conté (1973-1993). Auteur de nombreux ouvrages sur le folklore, dont La vie paysanne (1860-1900), paru en 1982, le père Lemieux a reçu plusieurs honneurs : Prix Champlain (1972), médaille Luc Lacourcière (1979), Prix du Nouvel-Ontario (1983), Ordre du Canada (1984), médaille Marius Barbeau (1986) et Ordre de l’Ontario (1992). Il est décédé le 26 mars 2008.

Born on January 5, 1914 in Cap-Chat (Québec), Germain Lemieux was ordained as a Jesuit priest in 1947 and later became a professor at the Collège du Sacré-Cœur and the University of Sudbury. From 1948 to 1958, he studied New Ontario folklore, then founded the Institute of Folklore at the University of Sudbury in 1959, which became the Franco-Ontarian Folklore Centre in 1972. He continued to travel throughout Northern Ontario to gather tales and popular songs, which he published in a collection of 33 volumes titled Les Vieux m’ont conté (1973-1993). Father Lemieux authored several books on folklore, including La vie paysanne (1860-1900), published in 1982, and received numerous honours, including the Champlain Award (1972), the Luc Lacourcière Medal (1979), the New Ontario Award (1983), the Order of Canada (1984), the Marius Barbeau Medal (1986) and the Order of Ontario (1992). Germain Lemieux died on March 26, 2008.

Centre franco-ontarien de folklore

Le Centre franco-ontarien de folklore est un chef de file dans le domaine de la conservation et du développement du patrimoine. Les travaux de son fondateur, le père Germain Lemieux, et la réalisation de l’Inventaire du patrimoine franco-ontarien lui ont acquis une renommée enviable. Reconnu comme organisme provincial de patrimoine en 1991, sa mission est de recueillir, de préserver et de mettre en valeur le patrimoine oral franco-ontarien. Le centre se consacre à la recherche et à l’interprétation de la culture franco-ontarienne en recueillant et en mettant aux archives des documents sur son patrimoine matériel, spirituel, symbolique et historique. Le centre offre des ateliers et des conférences, une bibliothèque de référence, des visites guidées sur les expositions ayant trait à la culture canadienne française, une banque de données sur le patrimoine franco-ontarien et des archives du folklore.

The Franco-Ontarian Folklore Centre is a leader in the field of conservation and development of heritage. The work of its founder, Father Germain Lemieux, and the realization of the Inventory of Franco-Ontarian heritage have earned it an enviable reputation. Recognized as Provincial Heritage Organization in 1991, its mission is to collect, preserve and enhance the Franco-Ontarian oral heritage. The center is dedicated to the research and interpretation of the Franco-Ontarian collecting and archiving its material, spiritual, symbolic and historic heritage. The center offers workshops and lectures, a reference library, guided tours of exhibitions relating to French Canadian culture, a database on the Franco-Ontarian heritage and folklore archives.
