Une bulle est un document, originellement scellé (du latin bulla, le sceau), par lequel le pape pose un acte juridique important tel qu’une nomination épiscopale, un indult, une définition dogmatique, la convocation d’un concile ou une canonisation. Le pape Urbain VIII (1568-1644) a émis plusieurs bulles, dont une dès son accession au trône de saint Pierre pour officialiser la canonisation d’Ignace de Loyola, fondateur des Jésuites. Le pape Grégoire XV en avait fait un saint, mais la bulle n’avait pas été émise.

Une autre bulle d’Urbain VIII est très spécifique à Sainte-Marie-au-pays-des-Hurons et prend la forme d’un indult. En droit canonique, l’indult est une dérogation à la loi, accordée par le pape ou le Saint-Siège, qui dispense du droit commun de l’Église catholique, soit une communauté de fidèles, soit un particulier.

Urbain VIII a accordé un indult pour permettre au missionnaire Isaac Jogues de célébrer la messe même si les Iroquois lui avaient broyé le pouce et l’index de la main gauche. Cette permission était nécessaire, car les règlements de l’Église interdisaient alors de célébrer la sainte messe avec des doigts mutilés.

Papal Bull (1644)

A bull is a document, originally sealed (from the Latin bulla, seal), in which the Pope sets out some significant juridical act, such as an episcopal appointment, an indult, a dogmatic definition, the convocation of a council, or a canonization. Pope Urban VIII (1568-1644) issued a number of bulls, including one upon his accession to the Throne of Saint Peter to formalize the canonization of Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits. Pope Gregory XV had made him a saint, but the bull had not been issued.

Another bull by Urban VIII is quite specific to Sainte-Marie-among-the-Hurons and takes the form of an indult. In canon law, an indult is a dispensation granted by the Pope or Holy See that exempts either an individual or a community of the faithful from the general law of the Catholic Church.

Urban VIII granted an indult allowing missionary Isaac Jogues to celebrate Mass despite the fact that the Iroquois had crushed the thumb and index finger of his left hand. This permission was necessary because Church rules at the time prohibited Holy Mass from being celebrated with mutilated fingers.
